Lazaro was plucking a chicken he caught this morning when he heard the sound of a helicopter approaching from the north. He was starting to enjoy his castaway lifestyle. It was almost as if the aircraft’s unexpected arrival was an unwelcome disturbance to what had become his regular daily routine. In the weeks he had spent on the lam, he had become well settled in. He was now not only a capable survivalist but a seasoned homesteader. He watched the copter descend toward the compound, so he abandoned his task and headed over there. When he got there, he could see the chopper parked in front. The pilot remained aboard, so he dared not move any closer, so he took cover and waited.

After an hour or so, he saw the truck drive up, and four men got out. One was Mateo, the regular boat operator. He did not recognize the others, and they appeared to be speaking a foreign language. Lazaro was too young to remember when Havana was crawling with Russians. Mateo returned to the truck with another guy who helped him unload some things from the back, carrying them inside the building. Evidently, the compound was about to be reoccupied by a different cast of characters. Mateo reappeared from the front of the building, accompanied by another man who Lazaro recognized immediately.

“Maldita sea. El bastardo ha vuelto.” The bastard is back.

It had been a couple of weeks since I’d last talked to Londi. It seemed I was always the one checking in with her since she usually treated any exchange with me as an irritating annoyance. When she picked up, I was expecting one of her snarky barbs, so her initial words caught me by surprise.

“Nick. Where the hell have you been? I’ve been worried about you. I’ve left you like a dozen voicemails until your box was full. Don’t you ever check them?”

“Sorry about that,” I said. “I’ve been a little distracted lately. You’re not the first one to get on me about that. From now on, I promise to do better. Is something wrong at the office?”

“No. Things here are humming away. The paralegals are fantastic, and they stay on top of everything. It’s that damn Ernie Delgado who’s been driving me nuts. He’s been calling here almost every day bitching and cursing that he can’t get ahold of you. I’ve managed to blow him off, saying you’re on vacation, and I don’t know how to get in touch with you. Yesterday he said it is essential that he talk to you right away and that you are in mortal danger.”

“I know,” I said. “I’ve been dodging his calls. “Sorry you had to be involved in this. I’ll call him as soon as we hang up and tell him to quit bugging you.”

“So, do you want to fill me in on this? Like where are you, and why would you be in mortal danger?”

“This is strictly between us, OK? I’m with Nate on his boat. Right now, we’re in the Cayman Islands on a mission to find my nephew and rescue him.
